Win98 to Win2000 (full install) Plus De-partition Help Needed
Hi Ya'll,
I have a laptop that is currently on Win98 that has a partition that I want to get rid of. Someone else did this, so I have no clue how it's done or how to undo it. Once the partition is gone I want to install Win2000, but I'm not sure if this is the right order of things, or if there are any "gotchas" I need to be aware of before attempting the new install. I've done a new install of XP over Win95 before with no problem, but that was *my* computer and was willing to risk it. The laptop is not mine, so I want to make sure I don't kill it Any tips, tricks, suggestions for a.) de-partitioning and b.) Win98 to Win2000 new install would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, -Jill |

There should be NO problems. I installed W2k, had 98se.
If you have the cd and 4 floppies? Just pop in the cd and do what it tells you to.It does all the work!

That's what I was hoping about the new install.
![]() Now about that partition...I can't actually see it anywhere on the computer, but it was intended to separate the system files from the data files. I'm told there is a total of 6GB on the laptop, but C: only shows 2.92GB. The other three drives (A:, D:, & E are for the floppy and disc drives.I want to delete the partition, but I'm afraid of losing data. Help!! |

Deleting the partitions will loose all data.
That is the point.

Sooo.....deleting or otherwise removing the partition is not an option unless I want to wipe the drive completely clean and start over?
If that is the case, what do I do with the 3GB that I cannot see? Is it useable for anything? |

that's my question also, what happens to the unallocated files.

It depends on the circumstances.
If you have Unallocated Space then you can create a new partition. It should not effect your current partition. If you want to merge the unallocated space to create one full partition then you will need Non-Destructive partition software such as Partition Magic.
