View Full Version : Wireless Gateway Setup

Okay - a few posts ago I asked for help with getting my wireless connection to share files (this was my own stupidity for not setting up my firewall correctly... :dizzy: ). Now, however, I cannot get to the internet with the conection! A friend of mine said to setup the connection to recognize the IP address of my internet connection as my gateway for the wireless connection to see the internet. Well, my own limited networking skill sreared their ugly head again and I drew a COMPLETE blank on how to do that!
So... what I am asking is this: Where do I setup the gateway access? My laptop connects to my work inter- and intranet just fine without me tweaking anything on the connection on the laptop it self, so how do I set it up on my home PC? And what subnet mask should I be using and so forth... assuming I know very little about networking (as it is the truth with some things!) and walk me through the proper setup for having my laptop see my PC's internet connection through a wireless connection - the PC connection is a direct connection that I do have shared out already!
Thanks again,
Mazeus

Hi,
Can you please detail how exactly your network is setup - ie. routers, hubs, pcs, windows internet connection sharing etc.
Also if you have a router did you set this up ? If so what is the make & model of the router.
What your friend might have meant would be to set the gateway to the IP address of your router. Also have you specified Nameserver IPs ?

Okay - my network:
I have DSL Setup for my desktop computer through the typical modem. This plugs directly into a networking card and I do not use a gateway or router or anything like that; it's just a direct connect to the internet that I have shared out for my network to use (which is just the laptop and the desktop).
My laptop connects to my desktop with a wireless connection. It is setup to automatically find an IP and DNS and connected to the desktop without a problem. It also connects to my work wireless without any difficulty as well. At work I can connect to the internet and intranet just fine but not at home.
If I check my status at home I have no Gateway but the IP and Subnet mask are just fine. I can share files between the two of them without a problem I just can't see the internet. Do I need to setup the wireless connection on my desktop to point the gateway to the IP address of the network card that has the internet access or what?
I hope this is enough information... please let me know if I need to post anything more!

This is just IMO so take it for what you will but for ease of setup and security I think your best bet to get done what it is you are trying to do would be to add a dsl wireless modem/router or at least a wireless broadband router to your network setup. This will allow you to share the internet connection along with files/folders between computers as well as offer you a nice hardware based firewall in the router. To say it would be more stable than ICS or the like would be an understatement at best. So there you have it just my 2 cents.

If you have a firewall on the ICS computer, you need to set a trusted zone for your local network. You might find this in the exceptions part of the configuration page. Look for "zones", "exceptions", or "networks" and that should be where you set it up. Make sure you give your local network full access or at least full access to the ICS ports.
