View Full Version : Odd port issue...

Well, I have an incredibly odd problem. High number ports on my computer for some reason have stopped working in the past 3-5 days. For example, I cannot make any connections on ports around 27000-27015 (familiar anyone? Counter-Strike D: ). I'm on a network, with NAT, and I run NIS 2005. Here's some crap I've figured out so far:

It is not my router. (Tried directly connecting, same problem)
It is not NIS 2005. (Done it numerous times with it off)
Windows Firewall is not on. (... I turned it off)

I have no clue what's caused it, and likewise, I have no clue how to fix it. Any help at ALL would be GREATLY appreciated. I'm going to be running a full system scan with Norton tonight... but somehow I doubt a virus would want to deprive me of an incredibly old first person shooter.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer. Oh, and on a side note, if this helps at all, I can get server lists for CS but just not connect to any of them.

Welcome :)

If you have tried it without a Router & Firewall then I cannot see it being a Port problem as you would have no port restrictions.

Do you have any other software that would disable ports?
Have you checked with fiends and the ISP to see if there are problems?

Have you tried resetting the Modem and Router.

I forgot to mention that my laptop which is on the same network is still able to connect and play CS using those ports.

If you are using ME or XP then try a System Restore to before the problems.

So much for that... the last restore point is yesterday... lol. I'm probably going to end up just formatting (Probably about time anyway) and using Norton Ghost for the first time, unless there are any more ideas to be thrown around the table. I'll give it a few days. Thanks for your help.

You could do a netstat /a from a command promt to see ports and whats going on under the hood

Do you by chance attend OSU? This has been a very common firewall problem here as OSU is upgrading their routers and firewall rules.

If you are behind any sort of university or business firewall it is likely that they are causing the problems. IDS and IPS systems are getting more and more advanced along with the firewalls and at times cause conflicting connections which causes ports to timeout.
