help i cant connect to the internet!!

hi i just recently installed a new modem in a friend's pc, everything is setup correctly to my knowledge, but when i try to connect to aol, it hangs up at the "talking to network" step. So then i figured ah AOL=****e, so ill try to use my cox remote dial up access to get on the net.. so i set that up and it tries to connect for about a minute then disconnects!! why wont this thing connect to the net?? can anyone help??

The first failure was because you're using AOL , the second was because you tried to use AOL :rotflmao:

Ok seriously, what is the modem you installed (exact model please).

While you're looking that up. Check to make sure the modem properties are properly configured for the dial up connection. Set the max port speed to 114000 (i think), no parity, stuff like that.

heh yea i personally dont use aol, this is a friend's computer, but i know from past experience that aol=crap.. anyways i have a compusa smart link 56k v.90 voice modem

As far as I can find there hasn't been any major issues with that modem line. You may consider trying a different modem to see if it is the hardware.
