Outlook 200 vs. pop3 server

Hi,
My emails to certain email addresses (but not all of them) just won't send but I can receive from those addresses.
They will send however if I'm using Webmail.
I'm using Outlook 2000 (because I use it also to sync with my PDA).
My ISP is "Highstream.net" which uses the POP3 server.
I have seen in some previous posts that there seems to be problem with POP3 and Outlook.

Does anybody use Outlook 2003 and a POP3 server? Maybe this problem has been resolved with the newer version?
Is there a big improvement between the 2000 and the 2003 version?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Outlook and POP3

Thank you, Renegade.
Yes, I have been in touch with my ISP and we have gone over all of the settings together which seemed ok.
This is why I thought that maybe Outlook 2000 and a POP3 Server don't get along.
I'm really not sure what kind of server webmail (with Highstream.net)uses but the messages are going through with it.
If you have any suggestions, I will very much appreciate it.

I would make sure my server settings in outlook are right. Example pop3 server would be something like pop3.highstream.net and smtp would be smtp.highsteam.net all that would be whatever they use for servers mind you. Then make sure the account name is right and password. Alot of times the account name will be the same as the email address but sometimes an ISP will use a different account name example your email address would be anken@highstream.net but the account name might be m63664-4. The best way to find out what needs to be imput into outlook is log on to the isp's website and look for Config email clients for email. After you have made sure all those are as they should be you might want to check the windows firewall and see it outlook can send to the internet as it may be blocking sends from outlook. Also if you run norton or avg make sure the email client settings are correct in there.

Outlook and POP3

Thanks for your thoughts.
Yes, in my case the email address and account name are different. I have gone over all of the possilbe settings with a Highstream.net tech help.
Btw, I have been with Highstream.net for a couple of years and have been very happy with it. It's reasonably priced and the tech support is free and courteous and helpful.
Anyway, everything seems to be configured right. I have also disabled ZoneAlarm and AVG Antivirus. Unfortunately, it didn't make any difference.
For this reason I was wondering if anybody else had any problem with Outlook2000 and a POP3 Server.
I wouldn't mind upgrading to a new version of Outlook if this would solve the problem.

Outlook works with pop3 servers, that is what its meant to do its a pop3 reader. For your outlook not to be sending mail someting has to be wrong with either its sends being blocked locally or the outgoing smtp server isn't setup right either in outlook or the server itself. You said you turned off ZA and AVG do you by chance have windoes firewall running? Maybe take a look and see if outlook is set as someting it willl allow sends to the internet from.

Outlook and POP3

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have disabled the Windows Firewall because I'm using Zone Alarm Pro.
I guess I'll have to contact Highstream again and go over all of the settings once more.
I'm glad that Outlook is not the problem.

It fails to send to the same addresses all of the time, or could it be related to file size? Do you have it set to log in with your email settings or your regular highstream settings? Try the opposite of what you currently have. It should be under advanced settings. I can't look at it at the moment as this machine uses pegasus mail not outlook. I experience that problem at times as my email server is not bellsouth, my broadband provider. If I use their email, I have no problems. I have to set it to my email settings or bellsouth bounces larger files as spam.

Outlook and POP3

Thank you for your help.
Yes, there are certain addresses, about 20% of the addresses in my address book, that just don't get delivered. When I use those same addresses and send them via Highstream's Webmail there is no problem.
Now I'm kinda lost....The settings are the same with Outlook and Highstream as far as I know.....
I guess it would be a Highstream problem then.

Are they blocking port 25? I had an issue like this with my cousin's computer and SBC, they were blocking port 25 and he had to sign an opt out form. However, he wasn't able to send any email at all from that address. Are you attempting to send mail from multiple addresses and it only is not working from 1? He, my cousin, had multiple addresses that he was sending from.

Outlook and POP3

Thanks for writing.
I'm not sure about port 25. Will have to do some searching.
The weird thing is that I can send to those addresses using Webmail and also using the "reply" feature.
It doesn't work with Outlook 2000 or Mozilla's Thunderbird though.
Guess that it must be a port 25 issue. Will have to call Highstream again and go over all the settings.
Maybe those adresses have some kind of spam blocker.....

you said emails to specific address cannot be sent? How do you know? Are you getting some sort of return to sender or what?

Outlook and POP3

Yes Renegade, with some of the emails I get the "unable to send...Mailer Daemon...".or something like that and the others just never arrive even without getting the "failure to send" notice.
I know this because of the " why haven't you answered my emails" questions.
In the meantime I have tried not only with Outlook but also with Thunderbird.
The results are the same.
This leads me to think that the problem is with the Highstream settings somewhere....Yet, when I write to those particular email addresses via Webmail with Highstream, it always arrives.
I'll try to contact Highstream on Monday and hope that something can be done to fix this problem.

I don't have outlook in front of me so it makes it difficult. As I recall, you have to set the security settings to log on to your email server with the username and password for your email, not the internet provider, other wise you are seen by some other email servers as spam. The pegasus mail setting is under security for the outgoing mail "Login to the SMTP server using a POP3 username/password from this POP3 definition:" (this is where the email definition would go which would include the username and password). I hope that helps.
