Hello, Im not familar with computers on a technical level and so may not be rightly naming or identifying my current problems.

My computer is networked to another using a "nat router" I believe, which while a bit old has functioned reasonably fine until now. Now when I log onto various online games everything will freeze for a few moments at random points then resume but make up for the momentary downtime by rapidly playing through the events that would have occured in the normal period without any hiatus.

initially I thought this problem was related to my power supply box as a few weeks earlier it was emitting a funny smell and since then makes a lot of noise along with the computer shutting down frequently. I understand this is a significant problem in itself which will be rectified shortly, it is too easy to lose data for my studies with a volatile computer.

anyway I thought this was the source of my freezing problems online until I tried the games in sinlge player where no similar instances occured. Hence I believe it must be related to either my network whether in hardware or software.

so bascially what I am asking for help is where and how to start trying to identify the cause of the problems. Thanks for any advice and aid.

Wow, that is interesting, you must be using a game that employs TCP/IP... Oh well.

What exactly happened with your power supply... I'm concerened you may have sent a small power surge through your computer, if your network card was active durring this, it is possible you damaged the chip.

yes that may well be the source of the problem. Im not sure what happened to the power supply since it was a recent purchase, maybe an insect (a slight problem with cockroaches of recent) made it's way into a volatile part of my computer.
