My Win98 system seems to boot up fine. The wallpaper comes up and then nothing else. No tool bar, no icons, nothing. The mouse works and Task Manager indicates Explorer is running. I tried Scanreg/Restore to a date before the problem and it didn't fix it. When I boot up in safe mode there is still nothing.

I believe your "show desktop icons" feature must have been de-selected. To show desktop icons right click anywhere on your screen, from the popup menu select "active desktop" then click on show desktop icons. It this is the problem this should take care of it.

"Show desktop icons" is not a feature available in Windows 98.
There are a some possible solutions on this page (http://support.gateway.com/s/issues/2-1330790523.shtml). Although it is a Gateway support page, the solutions will apply to any Windows 98 system.
Solution #1 applies only if you have GoBack installed, though.

Thanks. I will try the solutions from Gateway. The description on the Gateway page is exactly what I am experiencing.

I tried everything exactly as written. Nothing worked. At least using the Winfile shell I can actually use my computer. Any other suggestions?
