Working on middle son's pc, Windows 98SE. The system will not boot up and displays the below screens. Sorry I can't go with Hijack This or anything.
When firing up we get one beep, pause, one beep.

1st screen:
Novell Netware Ready Firmware v1.00 (940810)
Press (Shift-Tab) key to Start Menu
1. Boot from Local Drive
2. Boot from Network Server

Then I cannot select #1 or #2 and the system is stuck. If I'm not fast enough to push the Shift-Tab, I get the following screen:

2nd screen:
Novell Netware Ready Firmware v.100 (940810)
Analizing network media type, this will take a few seconds...
OK

RPL-ROM-ADR: 0000A E645 B36B
RPL-ROM-IRQ: 12
RPL-ROM-PIO: D400

RPL-ROM-FCC: 01 (and counts up well past 200, I gave up)

Any suggestions? As my signature says...

Thanks for all of you that looked at the thread. I got the beast running by pressing F8 a thousand times upon startup and started with the Windows98 setup. It wouldn't start any other way, with or without CD Rom. Reinstalled Win98SE and everything appears to be working now. I think this machine has a serious problem in the BIOS and was considering flashing it and going back to square one. I've never done that before...how to? Thanks.

Hi

You can check out some of the GREAT tutorials here at CTH in the Hardware section.

I had this problem after changing the fan on my processor. I initially thought I'd cracked the chip or at least dislodged something in the bowles of my computer. What I'd actually done however is altered the bios so that my hard disks weren't registered anymore. I'd disconnected them to listen to the fan noise when comparing two fans . I hadn't physically changed the bios, my xp machine had done this automatically.

The problem was easily fixed (after a small period of foriegn language!) by: pressing delete key on start up to enter the bios section. Under the Basic Settings, I then altered the hard disk spec to 'Auto' rather than 'None'. A quick save on exit and everything is back to normal. (Hint: If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!) ;)
