;) Hi sufferers and helpers.

My weekend question (before going to pray - LOL)

After defragmenting I've got the note:

Files that did not defragment:
2 1.083 KB\WINNT\ShellIconCache

Why does it not defragment and what is that ShellIconCache for?

Wish u all a happy weekend!

It's a cache of indexed icons and no more, but it helps Explorer get the icons it needs in a hurry. It's a windows system file and is constantly being written to while windows is running, thats why it doesnt defrag. you can rebuild it by deleting it before windows boots, and windows will rebuild it when it loads (it's like the page/swap file in this regard). some programs (like Xqet) will allow you to reset the cache for next boot up.

Yesterday doing a defrag I received the same message and I looked at the shelliconcache. Wow, what a lot of writing. I will take the senior member advice who knows just enough to be stupid, and delete it and then reboot. Thanks.

I use a third party defrag program and I've never seen an error or log message that indicated that it could not defrag that file. I'll have to look at the log again to see.
