Howdy:
Nothing wrong at all with deleting index.dat.. won't harm a thing..
However, you will need a third party cleaner such a CCleaner (ther are others out there), or boot into DOS and clean it that way!!

Index.dat are files hidden on your computer that contain all of the Web sites that you have ever visited. Every URL, and every Web page is listed there. Not only that but all of the email that has been sent or received through Outlook or Outlook Express is also being logged.
No big deal unless you are a spy or any activities you want destroyed completely. I wouldn't think a name like sweet_lil_sis would have anything to worry about. But in these paranoia times, one never knows.
Here's what I use to clean all: Spider.exe (http://www.fsm.nl/ward/)
Just download Spider v1.16. It's a very simple app to use.
Good luck.
