connection icon in systray missing

Hi, I have a strange little problem.

I am trying to put back the connection icon (the two monitors icon in the systray that shows when one is online). The computer used to show them, and now it doesn't.

In the modem settings, it is ticked to show, but it doesn't. It's minor, Iknow, but my friend uses it to see at a glance is she is online. Windows 98 Toshiba Laptop. Any thoughts?

much appreciated, as always.

Riva

PS. I unchecked, restarted and then re-checked, but alas no icon.

Hey Riva,

Not sure what you mean by ticked in modem settings. Control Panel - Network Connections. Right click on your connection (such as dial up), then click Properties, check the show icon box. Then hit Okay. Is this what didn't work? What type of connection are you using (ie. wireless)?

Hi, Thank you for responding.

I tried the steps you suggested and there is no "show icon" in the properties for the dialup connection.

However, there is a link therein to the "configuration" for the v.90 internal modem, then to options, and then under "status control", "Display Modem Status" is already checked. It just doesn't display the status in the systray.

The computer has several dialup connections set up (my friend travels a lot) , all of them have the checkmark in place.

Any other suggestions? Thanks.
Riva

Miz, sorry there is no "customize" button. The taskbar properties/taskbar options tab only offers the choices of - always on top; auto hide; show small icons in start menu; and show clock.

For some reason, your post doesn't show to me in the thread online, hence the cut n' paste.

thanks

Yes, Riva, sorry about that. I finally realized I'd posted a Windows XP answer in the Windows 98 forum and deleted my post.

Riva,

My apologies for adding to your missing icon mystery, but you are right - Windows98 does not have the show icon option I suggested. A little too much faith in my memory skills on my part. I double-checked that on my 98 disk, but that disk doesn't have the modem installed right now. I'll hook up the modem and check for a fix. In the meantime, let's see if someone else will post a solution here before then.

Hi Riva,

Took some fiddling around. Most instructions do indicate ticking the Display Modem Satus box to enable a Taskbar Connection icon, but in truth, it doesn't seem to work either way. However, goto My Computer - Network Connections. At the top of the window click on the Connections tab, then go down and click Settings. Check to see if the top box "Show Icon On Taskbar After Connected" is ticked. If not, tick it and click okay. Hopefully that will restore your friend's icon.

Please post back with an update.

Tom

Hi, thanks for the reply. However, I gave the system back to my friend this afternoon. I hunted all over the place for settings that might affect the status icon, but saw naught. My friend will be away for a while, so I can't try the steps until a later point. I will post back at that time. Take care. Riva
