Iraq!

Wow, I just saw this on the 'puter and then I turned on CNN right away.....hope it's not the start of anything, I don't even know anything yet....a briefing soon, apparently. I'm hearing it was a "routine" enforcement action.......

Yeah, routine...I think they saw a six year old aiming a slingshot at a Stealth bomber.

But I think the routine here is a new President of the USA and a General Election in Britain soon.

I know that as "foreigners' we shouldn't get involved in political actions in other countries, but your Mr Bush makes a nervous wreck out of me! I think he's one very trigger-happy gentleman!! It certainly didn't take him long to get going on this one, did it??

I am by no means a bush supporter, but I have to hold my dislike and give the man a change to show whats he made of.
I just got done reading 2 different articles on what happened and why.
I see why they have to show Hussein they are not fooling around, but you know this is turning into another Havana with a dictator like Castro
time keeps marching on and nothing is changed

well as a foreigner I see it a little different.

If Iraqi planes were flying over the USA would you not think it was within your right to shoot them down? You'd be darn upset if they bombed your country in order to protect their planes.

Is not every country entitle to it's soveriegn airspace? Why is Iraq any different?

Don't get me wrong, I have no use for Saddam and what he has done to his own country, but he is far from the only dicatator in the world. Who gets to make the rules as to which countries are entitled to their own soveriegn airspace? Big Brother? The self appointed world cop (and their lakeys the Brits)?

The whole thing smells of daddy getting another kick at the can telling GW what to do.

just my opinion.

Well, a couple of things....

The media, always seemingly disappointed that Armageddon is not upon us, as I recently heard someone put it - will of course play this to its hilt and spin it every which way. If the facts are correct as given out, it does sound like Saddam has escalated his attempts to shoot down our planes 90% in the last month alone, and so I do understand why we did this, and I would support it.

Now, having said that, some good points were raised...Sassy, while I disagree that this smells of Daddy getting another kick at the can, I think you put it well in your first paragraph.....that Iraq and many other countries feel upset and feel wronged over this. There's so much of a cultural difference in how we think. Interestingly, I listened to at least two "experts" yesterday; one saying that there is no threat from Iraq, another just the opposite. I find it very confusing, frankly. And as Ironside said, nothing ever changes......

What is hype and what is real here; I do wish I could know that for sure!

Irag is most likely the most dangerous of all. Maybe one or two of you should take a close look at this before voicing your opinion: http://www.foxnews.com/world/gulfwar/index.htm

Geez, I started this, I can't believe it!

I might not be popular saying this, but actually I see where Sassy is coming from! I don't know that I agree or disagree, as I said there are so many facets to the issue, but the United States does seem to think it's the all powerful patroller of the world sometimes, and yes, England is about the only one still going along with us....I had to look up the word lackey, but I don't think he meant anything personal to anybody! I remember having this discussion once when Tram was around, and he disagreed mightily with me which of course I respected - I just don't know; in fact, I often never know much of anything because I'm always trying to see things from different viewpoints.......anyway, I'm very uncomfortable here, somebody help me and tell me controversial subjects are alright!!

I would be very surprised to learn that Sassy was name-calling here. I suspect the word she was choosing was 'lackey', defined as 'a servile follower or attendant'. Over the years, many countries, of the 189 nations belonging to the UN, have followed the lead of the United Nations, riding behind them, on their coattails as it were, without voicing or showing much in the way of dissent. My beloved country ranks among those. And while we, as a nation, continue to play the role of "peacekeepers", I would in no way be offended by some believing that we were followers of the UN, as opposed to attempting to sway the other 188 nations to see things our way.

As in most discussions political or religious, opinions and emotions become the focus, rather than the topic at hand. Let's not let this happen here.....the subject of Iraq is volatile enough on it's own, and worthy of some serious consideration.

For my part, I was a little upset to see the way it had been written, as in...(and their lakeys the Brits)?

Would the same terms or phrase had been noted, had it been the persons home country??

I guess the sooner this gets closed the better, before things get out of hand.

Dave.
