How did the writers of the movie 2001 a space oddessy come up the the ships computer name HAL?

The HAL-9000 computer originally was named Athena and was supposed to have a female voice.

The name HAL is an amalgam of "heuristic" and "algorithmic," the two main processes of learning.

Impressive....most impressive! For a long time people thought the name HAL came from taking letters in the alphabet that come before the letters IBM.

Those questions were too hard.:eek::dizzy:

As far as HAL I was told there was a spelling error in the original script and the A was supposed to be an E.
