I just upgraded to Win2000Pro. I may be using the terms below somewhat incorrectly, but hopefully not.

As a part of my job (as a database programmer), I use a text editor frequently. Before my OS upgrade, whenever a file I was viewing was updated (as a result of a program run), my text editor would instantly pick up on the file update and let me view it. Now, with Win2000, it literally takes 9 or 10 seconds for my text editor to recognize the change and let me view it. All that time, my hard drive is running. I *think* this has something to do with the changes being done within the virtual memory of my hard drive rather than in my memory chips. (Sorry if that is not 100% accurate.) How can I speed up the memory processes? I update the files I'm viewing 100 or so times a day, and that 10 second lag is getting really annoying, especially when that *never* happened when I was running Win98SE. Is there a setting I can change? Should I change my virtual memory setting? If so, to what?

tell a little about the computer itself, cpu, ram, harddrive size/space available.

It is a dell P4 1300mhz. About 50gigs, but only using about 20gigs. Don't recall how many megs of ram, but its quite a bit. (I got the system in mid 2001, and pretty much maxed out how much ram I could get at the time.)

Again, I had no problems with this sort of thing with Win98SE. Win2000 just seems to run a lot slower, and it takes a lot of time to switch between programs, that sort of thing.

Thanks

Windows 2k may take a bit more juice to run but it shouldn't make a huge dent. Thats not to say I would run it on less than 512mb's of RAM. I know it will run with less but if you are multi-tasking under any OS the more RAM the better. Also the why you install 2k can make a difference. An upgrade instead of a clean install can often cause issues down the line as well as not run as well. Installing 2k under FAT32 IMO also causes lag because 2k's native file system is NTFS it runs better under that. NTFS is a much more stable and speedy file system anyway. Lastly make sure you have a fully patched system. Updates can fix bugs and improve overall system stability. Keep the system clean and after an upgrade it might not be a bad idea to defrag the disk. An upgrade can shift data and cause fragments meaning slower data access times.

Have you all service packs? I had a similar problem with all my DOS programs until I installed the SP 4.
