Man! I switched off the race after the finish, and hadn't heard anything. This is a sad day in auto racing. I wish Michael Waltrip could have gotten his first win w/o this dark cloud. Waltrip is a good, and humble man, and this will be hard on him as well. My prayers go out to the Earnhardt family.

I am very, very sad right now to hear of that. I was watching the race when it happened.

"Earnhardt is the leader among active Winston Cup drivers with 76 career victories. He also had the most victories at Daytona International Speedway, 34."

He died at 49.

Oh my god, I am in shock too!!!
Since coming over to the States, I'd got into Nascar racing, and loved watching as many races as possible.

This would have been such a joyous race for him, to see Michael Waltrip win, and the fact that Dale and his son Dale Jr. helped Michael win. I feel so sorry for all, Michael was already so overwhelmed about winning a race after something like 460 races since his last victory, and the fact that his brother was commentating on the TV!!

Sure is a sad day for motor racing!!!

Dave.

I never was a big Earnhardt fan, you all know the saying * Earnhardt, for all you do this bird is for you * but, I have watched NASCAR since I can remember, and it is always a tragity when something like this happens, no matter who you cheer for. I am deeply saddened for his family and his fans. This is truly a sad day in racing.

What makes it worse is the fact that during the race, all the commentators were talking and they were showing how Nascar are beefing things up in the safety of the drivers issue!!

As they showed the rerun of dale's crash, right after the race, I thought nothing of it after seeing the 18 car cash earlier in the race. And Darel Waltrip said more than twice that the bigest fear for a driver was hitting that wall! Not knowing at that very moment that Dale was already dead.

I still can't believe that it's true.
