#1. I just bought a used Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDS Laptop with a 120 MHg CPU, 48 MB RAM, & a HD that I just upgraded from 500 to 800 MB. Since I've had a lot of trouble trying to work with the W95 that came on it, & since I'm only going to use it for email when I'm traveling, & since I've also got a desktop at home for larger applications, I'll probably install W98SE.

#2. I've found 4 models at MicroCity4Less, & except for the price, I can't tell the differance!! Can anybody tell me what the differanace is?? Should I buy the cheapest one for $35.99??

I would be very wary of buying ANY of these Compaq OEM CDs for two reasons.

1. OEM branded versions of Windows are often tied to the the manufacturers own machines and will not install on other makes of PC despite claims to the contrary made by microcity. This is particularly true of Dell, Compaq, Gateway etc. And if it won't install you won't get a refund once you have seen the install key.

2. Even if it does install, I am not at all sure that you would have a legal copy of Windows since OEM versions are only supposed to be supplied with a new PC.

Windows 98 may be all but obselete, but that doesn't mean the rule of law doesn't apply.

Howdy:

Cheap prices but if you read the fine print you would have noticed you have to buy the hardware to make the sale legal!!

ARC,

I think you'll find that most of the posts in the thread you referenced are referring to Microsoft packaged OEM versions. What the links in your first post are pointing to looks like custom versions for compaq PCs. As Murry said, they may not work on your PC. Even microcity4less says that. Here's a quote from one of the pages you linked to in your first post.Multiple quantity of OEM product purchase: If you are a reseller or a big company purchasing department and you would like to purchase multiple quantity of OEM product. We recommend you to purchase one first to see whether it works for you. They seem to think that what they are selling may not work on all PCs.
