What are your top 5 sporting moments?
This was inspired by a post made by Darth in another thread.

Here's mine

1. Gareth Edwards try for Barbarians vs All Blacks, Arms Park 1972 (I was there! as Saint Max of Boyce once sung)
2. Gordon Banks' save against Pele, 1970 World Cup (quarter final?)
3. Kenny Roberts winning British 500cc Grands Prix, beating Barry Sheene after a race long dice including Boet van Dulmann (1979 or 1980 - I was there too!)
4.The rumble in the jungle - nuff said
5.Man Utd beating Eusabio's Benfica for the European cup, 1968. Sir Bobby's 30 yarder standing out in particular.

Talking U.S. here now guys:
"For people who were born between 1945 and 1955, they know where they were when John Kennedy was shot, when man walked on the moon, and when the USA hockey team beat the Soviet Union in Lake Placid in 1980."
Extraordinary event.:michaelan

Kiwi events:
BEST:
5: 3rd July 1991- Andrew Ettinghausen running down Richie Blackmore from opposite wing in Kiwis Vs Kangaroos test @ Melbourne. Kiwis win 24-8 but ET was my fav. player. Speed to burn. (Rugby League)
4: February 1983 - MCG Lance Cairns hits Aussie attack for series of 6 massive 6s - the one hander down leg side off Lillee the pick of the bunch (cricket)
3: Kevin Tamati & Greg Dowling Lang Park 1985 Heavyweight title fight... oops I mean League test. Greatest football punchup ever. (League)
2: Kiwi comes from last on the turn and wins Melbourne Cup 1981 (horseracing)
1: Sarah Ulmer wins Gold at 2004 Olympics in Individual pursuit and shatters world record and is shagged beyond belief. (Cycling)

hmm. 3/5 happened at Melbourne!

WORST:
5: October 1978 - Andy Hayden takes a dive to rob Wales of victory over the All Black at the 'Arms Park. Brian McKechnie kicks the goal. (Rugby)
4: Sick Sarah Ulmer loses Individual Pursuit semi-final at Sydney 2000 (Cycling)
3: ;) Kevin Tamati & Greg Dowling Lang Park 1985 Heavyweight title fight... oops I mean League test. Most disgraceful football punchup ever. (League)
2: All Blacks vs South Africa - World cup final. Ellis Park 1995 :( (Rugby)
1: Chappell orders Chappell to bowl underarm at MCG to prevent McKechnie from scoring a 6 off the last ball to Tie (Cricket)

Yep, I have only seen the re-runs but that was a very emotional moment for me.

WORST:

Nelson Park, Napier, NZ Getting a "slow hand clap" when I ran last by a country mile in my High School 1500m event. :D

How did I know that particular piece of antipodean vernacular would cause consternation amongst the British Isles viewers?

It means buggered...

Darn, no, that's worse!

It means EXHAUSTED, OK!

Actually, since her boyfriend was her coach, there's no telling whether the 1st interpretation was possibly correct. I wonder how that would show on the drug tests. :disgust:

Fair enough mate (it means both over here too).

However, when I was explaining to a Kiwi pal that I had a heavy cold, she nearly died laughing when I said I was "all bunged up".

My favourites :-

1) Herbert Armitage and Arthur Oswel forming Pontypool Rugby Club.

2) Pontypool deservedly became Welsh Club Champions for the first time in the 1913-14 season, winning 34 and drawing 4 of their 45 matches. Only 114 points were registered against their 607.

3) The year was 1927 and the first of Pontypool’s victims in this unique double were the Maoris, captained by Walter Barclay and managed by W T Parata. The Maoris, prior to reaching Pontypool, had defeated France, Cardiff, Newport and several leading English club and county sides, but on 1st January 1927, at the Recreation Ground, Pontypool, they were defeated by 6 points to 5 after a hard and spectacular struggle. The Maori team that day was: P Potaka, A Falwasser, D Pelham, L R Grace, W Mete, D W Neera, H Kingi, R Bell, O S Olsen, T Dennis, D Manihera, T P Robinson, S Gemmell, Rev P Matene and R Bell (captain). The second victory of the unique double came towards the end of the same year, on 8th December 1927, when Pontypool beat New South Wales by 6 points to 3. The “Waratahs” as they were known, had previously beaten Ireland and Wales and ranked as one of the best touring teams ever to come from Australia.

4) Sean Lineen who, after he and his two Kiwi colleagues, Scott Pierce and Lindsay Raki, had helped Pontypool become Welsh Champions in 1985-86, summed up their feelings with these words: “We like to play winning rugby, and nobody wins more than Pontypool!”

5) VietGwent (http://www.thisisgwent.co.uk/gwent/info/town_guide/pontypool.html)

Gwent has ALWAYS produced a strong supply for Cymru. Without Gwent, Welsh rugby wouldn't have a backbone.

Mind you saying that, one of the best things ever to happen to Gwent rugby was the demise of The Celtic (http://www.celticwarriors.info/index_cw.php) Warriors.

Dragons would be nothing without that lot.

I'd hazard a rough guess....you're a Pontypool supporter!;)

Jury still out on whether beanie's a Pooler then.

No need to rub it in about the Warriors. We still all gather on Friday evenings and through mud at ClipFrame (Leighton's factory).

The VietGwent, eh? Probably the absolute zenith of Welsh rugby - behind you on that one.

p.s. titmus is out of Love Island -have to go and watch her video now
