can't connect to MSN on gaim

Hey there, I'm trying to connect to the MSN Instant Messeging network using gaim (http://gaim.sf.net), but I get a "cannot authenticate, cannot connect" error. I'm using my full email blahblah@msn.com with the correct password (checked and double checked), and i've tried two accounts, both accounts i get the same error.

If anyone could offer some insight into what the problem is, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

What OS are you using and do you have a firewall?

i'm on winxp, with a wireless router and the computer having problems has norton internet security on it

i was searching and found NIS and gaim have had problems, but they should be fixed by opening a port in NIS, which didn't help. i even completely uninstalled NIS with no effect on gaim.

i also DMZ'ed the computer having problems, even though all my computers (including the ones it worked fine on) are connected to the same d-link router.

i found the issue is Norton Internet Security 2005, when i completely disable it, it works.

if i disable the firewall only, it still doenst work.

This striked me as pretty odd. Does anyone know a way to get around this?

Oddly enough, it didnt work when i uninstalled NIS the first time, thus i am afraid to just do that, which would be the simplest solution.

I would track down what was blocking it in NIS should be in the firewall someplace or maybe a resident shield or the like. I would also take that computer off DMZ and just forward the ports you need. Leaving a computer on DMZ is asking for trouble.

ports for MSN, Yahoo and Jabber

I have Gaim 1.3.1 with Norton Internet security 2004.

You need to open the following ports in NIS or Norton Firewall to be able to use Gaim:

Jabber: 5222 and 5269
MSN : 443 and 1863
Yahoo: 5000, 5001 and 5050

Note that these ports do not need to be open in Norton when using Yahoo or Microsoft's IM clients, which makes me think that these IM client are able to skip Norton locks.
