Howdy:
We need a whole lot more information than that I'm afraid..
What operating systems on both computers??
How are you trying to network them - Cat5 cross-over cable connected directly to the NIC's on both system??
Connecting both systems to a hub or switch using straight Cat5 cable??
If the systems are using XP, did you disable the firewall??

First is it XP home or XP Pro? This can be important as one of the biggest differences between the 2 versions is networking.
Are both of them sharing internet access? Is that working?
Can you ping the machines from each other by name? by IP address?
[ run cmd. In the command window enter "ping NAME_OF_OTHER_PC', then enter "ping IP_ADDRESS_OF_OTHER_PC"]
As Murray asked, have you tried disabling the firewall to see if it is the problem? A lot of the time it is simpler to get sharing with the firewall out of the way and enable it after you have a working configuration.
