I disconnect from AIM and IRC every five minutes (have it set to auto-reconnect), so I basically rejoin my irc channels 12 times an hour which can grow quite annoying for everyone else in them. The strange part is that when I disconnect from aim / irc, my connection itself is stable. If I'm playing an online game, streaming music, or browsing the web at the same time that aim/irc disconnect, gaming/streaming/browsing are completely uninterrupted.

Running windows xp pro service pack 2, replaced my cable modem, NIC, router. My current router is linksys befsx41. No software firewall. I'm really at a loss for what the problem could be. Why would I feel no momentary lag or disconnectiosn while playing online games but constantly disconnect from these chat programs? These programs disconnected on both my old router and the new one.

My computer is free of spyware/viruses. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello u5 and welcome to CTH,

I don't use IRC but I do use AIM(gaim). I have seen at least with gaim that changes in the NIC state of network connection can cause the AIM connection to terminate. On your router under the DHCP settings, what is the lease time set to? Try setting it to the longest it allows (usually about a week).

Maybe bAdWaYz has an idea, I know he uses IRC so I expect he'll have more experience than I.

I'm not quite sure exactly what you're talking about.. but i changed the DHCP lease time to one week (not sure what this does, but you said to increase it), and opened the ports 5190 (aim default) and 6667 (IRC default) on my router. Problems persist.

Edit: I forgot to add that I replaced my NIC, cable modem, and router BECAUSE of these problems. So the problem happened both on my old and new NIC. That's why it doesn't seem to me as if switching the NIC was the root of the problem.

Well I can't be of much help with AIM, but for IRC I may be able to help you out. First I would need to know what IRC network you use "DALnet, EFnet, Undernet, ect ect. Then what server you use to connect most of the time. Some dalnet servers use different ports or can connect over arange from 6667-7000 with the higher number being the more stable connection. Also some networks still need to have ident so forwarding port 113 helps. Lastly depending on what ver of IRC you use it may in fact be some script kiddie knocking you off IRC.

I spend most of my time on quakenet / gamesurge on either RANDOM us server or RANDOM uk server. If you could reccomend a different version of IRC to me, that would be cool : )
