I get a call today, this guy has no Internet connection. I go to his place with bAdWaYz to see what the prob is. Walk into his bedroom, and sure enough his PC, with wireless card, signal booster, etc, can't get a signal.
We go into the other bedroom, the PC there has a piece of CAT-5 from the NIC to the wall jack (the LAN connection). Online and fast, no problems.

On the floor is a nice new wireless router. It's plugged into the electrical outlet. No ethernet cable plugged in. And he's wondering why the heck he can't get a signal in the other room. :dizzy:

And you thought you had problems...............;)

hehe yeah that was fun :) Tuns out he was getting internet on his wi-fi computer from jumping on a nearby network and when it went out he just guessed it was his that had the problem when the fact is he never had internet on his because the router was as Zip pointed out just plugged into the outlet no cat5 at all hooked up.

Same here zip. The first thing I did at my new place was take a look at setting up the network. Everything was plugged in and going but they just wanted it checking.

Good job I did. All the pc's were shared and the wireless router had no encryption or password

Belkin don't even have a default pass. it was just blank

In Australia, you require an electrician's licence to work on wiring. Maybe the same should be done of computer networks?

Well we do have certification here but there is no one end all be all cert that you must have to work on networks. I don't think I would like to see one either because that would be yet another test I would have to dish out 400 bucks for.
