wireless router? whats with the wires?

i have a 2mb connection, i bought a router so i could use my computer and xbox at the same time.

it is a 4 port belkin router i use ethernet cables, my mum wanted to share the connection, but she wanted it wireless, so she couls take her laptop anywhere in the house and have broadband connected.

i thought i would need a wireless router, so i bought one, to my surprise it came with ethernet cables, and it says in the instructions to use a ethernet cable to connect from the router to the computer. i thought it was wireless!

what does it mean when it says it's wireless there are wires in the diagrams!

please can someone tell me what i need to make it wireless

a wireless router basically is a regular router with wireless capabilities...that means, you can do both wired and wireless routing with it...you don't necessarily have to use wired networking if you want to keep it all wireless...and you don't have to use wireless function if you want to do wired routing....OR say you have two computers, you can keep one wireless and one wired....whatever you want to do...hope this helps

How about a make and model to be sure you really got a wireless router?

Agreed give us a make and mod number of the router that would help a bit. As far as what you need to connect to a wi-fi router well any computer or laptop with a wi-fi adapter would connect to it wirelessly. Things to make sure of are:

If the computer doesn't already have one get a 802.11b or g wi-fi adapter.
Make sure the router is actually a wi-fi router.
If you want to use the XBox wirelessly you will need a wireless bridge for it also
