I am trying to find a way to check for all Win95, Win98, WinME and NT systems are on a particular network. I feel the easiest way to do this would be scanning by ip range. I would really like to do this for free. Does anyone know of a way to check for this simple piece of information?

Are to determine what machine are running what version of windows or what machines are on the network and if they are windows or Unix? If you can provide the context for your question, we can give you a better answer.
Is this a one time scan or is it something you see yourself doing on a regular basis? Are you looking for something that runs on windows or Unix(Linux)?
