Wireless?

I was about to bite the bullet and finally pay for Broadband instead of 56K. Then my girl told me if I just install a wireless card, I can piggyback on a wireless network for free to access the internet.

First, is she correct?

Second, before I invest in the wireless card, how can I find out if there is an ACCESSIBLE network operating in my aparment building or in the neighborhood?

Third, how much do I have to know in order to get a card up and working? Do I need special software? How hard is it to set up?

Before you go out and get a wi-fi card and start scanning you might want to check out this little blurb:

Hijacking a wi-fi connection its pretty illegal not to mention unsecure for you as well. Then on top of that there is the fact that you don't have any control over the connection. If that person for some reason turns off the router you can't get online. If you still want to go that route I'm sure you will find what you need on google but I'm not sure how much help you will get here because you are afterall trying to access another persons network. I would advise against this and just go ahead and get yourself a nice fast boradband connection setup.

I agree with bAdWaYz in all respects. There are few places that you can access the internet with your card that are legal. Even then, you may have to pay for the time utilized. Most large truck stops have "hot spots" for the drivers to use. Also, some internet cafes have WiFi available. I suggest using a standard broadband type connection, much more safe anyway.

Besides, who wants to go to a truck stop every time they want to access the internet?
