Not reading CD drives

On 2 year old DEll 2350,Win XP ..PC operates perfectly except for the CD drives not reading at all...neither one...electrically opens and closes fine... cannot read any discs.

Suspect cord which looks like a single cord plugs into motherboard on one end... other end and middle has two plugs..one for each drive... have tried unplugging and re plugging cord at the motherboard end, thinking it might be a problem with contacts.... did not do the same with other ends as it looked too "tight" to get in there and fiddle with them.

Any suggestions?

The device manage indicates "yellow" at the two drives.. and the system site shows no indication that drives exist..

Hi elderguy,

Did you make any changes to your system just before this occured?

Here's a few suggestions:

1) remove the drives from device manager and reboot.

2) Do a full virus scan.

3) Try another cable.

Good Luck
