JRE Windows Installer Service

Howdy,
Trying to install Sun's JRE2. Downloaded the 15 Mb version, also tried live download from a link I picked up in a Degsy post. I continue to get "Cannot Access Windows Installer Service", with a recommendation that I am in Safe Mode (I'm not). I have:
Run SFC using the 2K CD for any .dll issues.
Disabled AVG/SpyBot (TeaTimer incl.)/SpywareBlaster.
Downloaded the Installer from MS - got an already installed message.
Run a CTH search (of course). Checked Sun's FAQ's.
Started toying with Group Policies and decided to do something right instead.
Started this Thread here.
Thanks for any advice.

Edit add - 2000Pro SP4 / IE 6 SP 1

Check out the information in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article, "Error 1719. The Windows Installer service could not be accessed" error message when you try to add or remove a program.

Excellent Miz. No coincidences as usual - I had aborted an Office 2001 problem install while in a hurry last week and had never given it any thought. Gotta check it out when I get home - will post the results. Thanks.

The MS instructions worked and did the corrections. The ImagePath in the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\MSIServer was not the right path - did a double click Edit to enter the right path. Then did the next step of starting in Safe Mode, and typed msiexec /regserver in Run to register Msiexec.exe. After a restart, the Java installer worked like a charm. Thanks again.
