Lightning struck my compy....
There was an electrical storm last night and I believe my computer was struck but I'm not sure. At the time I was watching a DVD and I thought I saw some sparks after a very large lightning strike. I also heard some *snap*s and maybe even a *zap*. However, the computer works fine. The only problem is that when I try to sign on to AOL 9.0 Optimised, during the first step (Initializing the Modem) and error appears in the Sign-on Log Box declaring the "Port is invalid or busy". >> I tried changing the phone lines, thinking maybe the phone cord was fried from too much power surging through it. However, that was not the case as the same problem occured in a phone line that I had taken from a box. >> I also tried plugging in a phone to the outlet to see if it was the phone jack itself that was fried. The phone had a dial tone, so that wasn't the problem either. The only viable reason would be that the modem/port was damaged during the shock. Any assistance as far as what I could do to remedy this problem would be greatly appreciated. --- Thank you, Chocklure.

I would say right off hand its most likely a modem issue. Alot of dialup modems are known to have chipsets that fry in the least bit of voltage. Do you have another computer you could try that modem in? As cheap as dialup modems are these days it might be just as easy to go out and pick up a new modem.

Well, I had guessed that it was the modem that was the actual problem but I had no idea about the chipsets frying easily. Thanks for that.
No, unfortunately I do not have another computer to try that modem in. I'd hate to have to run out and get a new modem since I haven't had this new computer for more than three months. Next time, I'll be sure to unplug everything in the when a storm is around. -- I appreciate your assistance, thank you for your help. Chocklure.
