hey. i was just wondering if anyone could tell me how to fix something i've done. i had created a folder under 'my documents' titled' my pics' for storing various jpg's & gif's from the internet. well, i installed an early version of quicktime and it also installed a picture viewer. this caused all of my pictures to be displayed using the apple picture viewer. the problem with this is that i am using windows 95 and before, when i left-clicked on a pic just once, i could see a small version of it on the left-hand side of the window. the reason i could do so, as i'm sure most all of you already know, was because i chose to 'view as web page' under the 'view' option. but now, with the apple quicktime viewer, it won't show the smaller pic on the left side of the window when i single-click on the filename. can anyone tell me how to restore this feature of being able to single-click on the filename and have a small image appear on the left-hand side? any help would be really appreciated. i have a lot of pictures and now i have to double-click on them, which opens them up in their own window after a few seconds, just to find out what they are. this takes infinately longer than the original method of just scrolling down the list using the arrow keys on my keyboard and seeing a small pic on the left side of the window. thanks!

hey, thanks for the quick response. i'm not extremely gifted when it comes to computers so i was just wondering; if you had the time, do you think you could possibly explain the article you sent me a little bit? i'm not sure how to access the registry editor and when i do, should i add those lines (just the bold text i assume) if they aren't there? where should i type them? like i said, i'm kind of a novice when it comes to this sort of thing thanks again!

Hi again.
Please use the http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/images/reply.gif button to reply to the topic.
The registry editor can be a dangerous place as Microsoft warns but as long as you are careful there shouldn't be a lot of danger in the edit you need to do here.
Try the internet Explorer repair tool before you manually try to edit your registry.
Start>Settings>ControlPanel>Add/Remove Programs>Microsoft Internet Explorer & Internt Tools>Add/Remove>Repair>OK
If that doesn't fix it...
To access registry editor, Start>Run>
Type regedit in the box and click OK.
You will get an "explorer" type window with a folder tree on the left side.
You will see "My Computer"
Then
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
etc
Click the + next to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
You will see a long list of file types.
Find the one you are having trouble with (e.g. .jpg)
Click the + next to it and see if there is a ShellEx node, click it's + and see if the {BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1} key is there.
Make sure it's values are:
Name = (Default)
Type = REG_SZ
Data = {7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}
If it's not there, right click ShellEx and select New>Key
Type the {BB.......} as the key name.
It will automatically create a (default) value which you can then highlight in the right side and right-click and modify to type in the {737....} in the value data field.

hey again! thanks (again) for the assistance! i just can't seem to get it restored back the way it was however. for one thing, i don't actually even have an 'internet explorer repair tool' to speak of. your directions of how to get to it were great, it's just that after i double-click the 'add/remove programs' icon, there is nothing, and i mean nothing, titled 'microsoft internet explorer & internet tools'. anyway, tried the manual registry editor with no luch, even after putting in all the appropriate information as you told me to do and restarting the computer. i was informed of another possible way to restore and it involved double-clicking the 'my computer' icon on the desktop, selecting 'view' from the tabs at the top, scrolling down to 'folder options', and from there clicking the 'file types' tab....you probably know where this is going. :) anyway, that didn't work either. when i chose to remove the program that was being associated with jpg's (in this case, that damned dirty quicktime picture viewer), it removed it from my list of programs that i could remove the current associated file type and replace it w/ another. does that make sense? so thanks for all your help thus far. you really do seem like a knowledgeable person. any other suggestions for me 'cause i'm not quite ready to give up yet!

Well, I've just answered a similar question here (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8532) so I'm going to copy & paste :
1) Find a .jpg file and click ONCE to highlight.
Hold Shift and right-click the file and you should have an option to open with...
Find an application in the list that is capable of opening .jpg files e.g iexplore (not a good choice) or MSpaint (better) or a non-MS app like Paintshop or something and open it with that application.
If it opens it OK, repeat the process and this time tick the box at the bottom of the "open with" window that says "Always use the program to open this type of file".
2) Even easier, download and install the best free graphics viewer available - Irfanview. During the install process you will see an option to associate all image files with irfanview. Done!
This should get you a file association fix BUT i'm not sure it will solve the thumbnail preview problem so you may need to repeat that fix after you have rid yourself of the association to QT.
(p.s. you're not alone in hating QT! - If it's any consolation, it seems that QuickTime5 seems a lot nicer than previous versions).
