Low Disk Space
My computer keeps popping up Low Disk Space. I have tried removing some old pic and word documents but it doesn't free up any space. I am not for sure that deleting it and sending them to the recycle bin is removing them from the hard drive. I am pretty stupid when it comes to computers. Please HElp me free up some space.

Hello cgtucker, welcome to CTH.
Have you tried running disk cleanup? There are some good clean up programs out there that work great for cleaning up your drive, and are free. I use CCleaner it works great! Also you need to empty recycle bin.

Also for best results, defragment after cleanup. When you delete lots of files or large files, the HD tends to get fragmented and running a defragger will help you consolidate freespace will also move non contiguous chunks back together.

I did defrag in safe mode, emptied the recycle bin and ran disk clean up still no luck.

Another thing you can try is disabling system restore then re enable it, that should clear up some space.

Well if you talking about deleting unwanted programs then you can also go into add/remove programs in the control panel and uninstall any programs you don't need or not using anymore.
Start>settings>control panel>click on add/remove programs and see whats listed there. Then decide which programs you not using anymore or don't want then select the program then choose uninstall and you should see some increase in disk space after that.

I think I am going to have to just get a new computer. I have tried deleteing programs but I am not sure what some of the are and if I delete them if they will mess up other programs such as I use microsoft word, but not microsoft money or webpublishing wizard. I am afraid if I delete them that it will mess up my word and powerpoint that I have to have for school.
Thanks cgtucker |

You don't need to buy a new computer, you could add an additional drive external or internal to gain more space.

Hi cgtucker,
Let's see if there is some 'malware' involved.. Download HijackThis.exe from here and run a scan, save the log and post it in a reply.. http://216.180.233.162/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe If you have problems downloading it because of the low disk space, insert a floppy disk and download HijackThis to the floppy and run the scan... |
