So my friend downloaded A-squared virus detection program, and it idenitfied and deleted Exporer.exe. She cant go into safe mode, and obviously not regular mode.
She's also lost her Windows 98 cd, so we cant replace it there. Is there any other way? I thought maybe C:\windows\system\dllcache\explorer.exe might exist, but apparrently not.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you can find another computer(work, friends etc)running Windows 98 (same version as the broken computer)find the explorer.exe file and copy it to a floppy. Should be in C:\Windows directory. After you have it on a floppy use a Win 98 boot disk to boot to a prompt (A>) remove the boot disk and insert the floppy with explorer.exe file on it. Type"copy explorer.exe C:\Windows" (without the quotes)hit enter. The computer will ask you if you want to replace the file Y/N, choose Y(yes) Now Remove the floppy and see if it'll boot correctly. If not, post back we'll try something else.

Ok, will it work if I take it from a regular windows 98 cd?

It needs to be from the same version of Windows 98. Either Windows 98 or Windows 98se. Hope this works for you.

Edit your win.ini file:

1. rem Shell=explorer.exe
2. type in: Shell=taskmon.exe

can somebody tell me how to do that more in depth?
