Up until recently, I could boot my Win98 system straight to the desktop. It was quick with no hanging or lags. Now, for no apparent reason, after I turn on the computer, it goes to a numbered list, which offers the safe mode. Each time I boot up, I have to hit 'enter' on number 1 of this list for 'normal mode' to get to the desktop. After selecting 'normal mode' each time, it takes several minutes to boot to the desktop. Can anyone tell me why this is and how I can go straight from turning on the computer to the desktop in 'normal mode'? This computer is an older Pentium 3 but has plenty of memory and speed. There's not much on it. There's no internet connection. It's also not networked. I use it for older games that can't be run on the newer machines with WinXP. Thanks, and much appreciated for the help.

Welcome to CTH Blanch. When Windows loads, go to Start > Run and type msconfig and OK. Click on the General Tab and select Normal Startup. Reboot and let us know if this fixed your problem.
