Where do I start?

A few weeks ago I installed a game for the kids, it wasnt working properly so I un-installed it. However when i did that, it un-installed everything else as well, right down to windows 98! :disgust:

I have got everything back up and running. Well I thought I did, the only thing I cant do is play on yahoo games!!!! I have tried everything thru yahoo in relation to applets not loading.

I have been to java.com to download the latest version but I can't get it to install. I have tried the automatic online version - but I get an error saying -
We encountered an issue while trying to automatically install Java™ software onto your machine. As a result, Java software was not installed properly.
I have tried the manual download version, it downloads ok, but when I double click on it to install, I get the hourglass for a few seconds then nothing happens.
I have checked all my settings as directed by the website, and everything appears normal.

I have no spyware or adware as I have cleaned that all up with spy-bot and ad-aware (well everything those two identified).

I am at my witts ends, and suffering withdrawl symptoms badly by not being able to play my yahoo games. I could play them fine before this problem happened.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I need to do?

Thanks
Carolyn

Hi caro ash,
When you say you checked all your settings, does this include changing IE settings? You would need to enable activex (tools -internet tools-security-custom level). Did you disable all firewall programs, including the SpyBot TeaTimer resident program? In addition, remaining previous versions of Java could be an issue, depending on what you lost/restored. Post back and let's see what CTH folks can do.

I have activex enabled as far as I can see. What would I need to do to disable spybot teatimer? I have no idea about that one.

thanks

Overall, your goal would be to drop all security barriers that might interfere with Java loading. In SpyBot, click the Mode tab - check Advanced Mode. Then Click Tools-Resident. Uncheck the available box(s).
