Hey guys,

Thought i would try to get a little help here. Im at my wits end working on my mom's pc.

The main thing i want to do is get some files off the harddrive..she never was good at backing up the important stuff.

The harddrive will not boot windows at all. When i try to enter safe mode...no dice either. When I boot the pc up I get a "hard drive operating out of specs"

I have tried hooking it up as a slave to another small hd that I installed win me on quickly. but it wont even recognize the drive is there. On my pc I have winxp, I tried to hook the drive up as a slave to mine..but it only gave me the option of formating the drive.

When I hook the bad drive up as a master I can get to bios, but when I try to boot up..it replies with I need to run scandisk..but it cant find scan disk. If i try to continue the process it either says im missing registry files or some infsl help file or something like that.... cant remember exactly.

I also tried booting with cd rom support and using a boot disk but no luck. The files that she needs are saved on her desktop. Is there any way that I can get to those files?

I did manage to get into scan disk once. But it crapped out after a little while. I found a few cross-linked files and it appeared that many of the Norton antivirus files she had were on invalid locations.

Thanks a lot for any replies on this

Howdy and welcome to CTH:

Try booting into BIOS again and use the "Default Settings" option.. See what that does..

You may also have to "autodetect" the hard-drive once more..
