iPod > iTunes

Recently, our harddrive destroyed itself and half the data on the computer. Consequently, I lost much of my iTunes songs.

I realized that my iPod has all of my songs on their I can just put them back onto the computer. BUT...I'm scared that the stupid iPod will auto-update and replace it's currently larger library with the puny current one I have on the computer.

Is this an unfounded fear or will it truly wipe my iPod for the current iTunes library? If that's the case, how can I bypass the auto-update so I can import my songs from my iPod back to iTunes?

(someone correct me if im wrong) but i don't think there is any way on the macintosh to get the music back onto the computer. When i slipped up upgrading to tiger, i erased my hdd, so all my music was lost(but it was on my ipod) so i ended up purchasing CopyPod and transfering my music from my ipod to my windows computer. This also came in handly 6 months later when i built my current computer, and transfered my music again. Don't update it yet though, there may still be hope, but it is going to be a 3rd party program that is going to allow you to do this, not itunes. If you connect your ipod to itunes, it will be updated to the computers current library, so i would hold onto it a little bit and see if there is another option. I heard of one program like copypod for the mac, but it might just be mac to windows too, like how copy pod can use mac opener.

set the Itunes program to do manual updates intead of automatic then connect the ipod and drag the sound files from ipod to your computer
