I have an AMD Duron 850mhz system with 128mb ram but when I play MP3 files, does not matter what type of player, if I try to perform any other task the playback is choppy. If I try to surf and listen to tunes at the same time it's impossible. Is there a way to change settings or do something to prevent this problem ??

Hi jbator, welcome to Cyber Tech Help.

It would have been a bit more informative if you posted the type of
audio your computer has, like whether it's a sound card (make/model)
or onboard chips. Your motherboard (make/model) would also help in
that we could most likely point you to any upgrades for the motherboard
(if any) for sound and/or BIOS.

What is probably happening is you have limited resources (lots of stuff
running in the System Tray. The System Tray is the indented thing
where your clock is, all the icons to the left of the clock are programs
that are using resources (some memory). The programs are set to start
when Windows98 starts.

Rather than shutting some of those programs off at startup it would be
better for your machine over-all to receive more RAM. Your at 128Mb
so adding another 128Mb would help your machine deal with your
sound problem as well as make some other things run a bit faster.

What kbps are your MP3's? Anything less than 128 is going to give you crappy sound no matter how fast your PC is.

I don't know but this is an all in one motherboard. But I swear to god every time I do something while trying to play a MP3 file or cd directly it breaks up as it seems to be processing or reading data or writing data, Does my computer just suck or what ??? Tunes are okay if it's only that, If I try to open a program, surf, download porn etc. it breaks up.

Will additional Ram help ? PS, I tried closing all active programs on the task bar, same result, I unchecked all programs in MSCONFIG and restated, same result. Maybe I need a sound card ??

Thanks for any suggestion.
