Question System Registry Problems

My computer everytime it restarts comes up with the message "Windows encountered an error accessing the system registry. Windows will restart and repair the system registry for you"
This is extremely frustrating more than anything. Does anyone have any hints on how I can overcome this problem. Have done all the normal things, scandisk, defrag, virus check. Anything that gets loaded onto computer now looses its settings, passwords, etc., everytime this happens.
Would appreciate any advice!

Hi AnnieM - it could be an issue with your RAM but there a couple of things that you can look at first.

Go to My Computer > Control Panel > System and click on the Performance Tab. Click on the Virtual Memory Button and make sure that "Let Windows manage my Virtual Memory Setting" is selected. Also note how much space is left free on your Hard Drive. Ideally you should have at least 300mb and preferably 500mb.

If you find no problems there, try this. Go to Start > Shutdown and Reboot to MS-DOS mode

You will now be in DOS mode, and a DOS prompt looks like this: C:\>

If there is anything in between the \ and the > then type: cd\ and press Enter. Then type:

scanreg /fix (note the space after scanreg and /)

Hit enter and then type exit.

If the problem still exists, download and install this free utility Doc Memory. Let us know what it reports.

Hope this helps. Cheers AM

Now isn't that damnedest thing you ever saw..Annmarie and AnnieM, both from the Land of the Long White Cloud!!!
But to serious things, I go with Annmarie here.... Nine out of ten it's a problem with faulty RAM.

AnnMarie, Thank you so much. Went through the Virtual Mem settings and they were all OK with 9576mb available. I then tried the scanreg /fix scenario and "touch wood" so far so good. I have restarted the computer about 20 times and all seems to be well. Will put it through more tests over next couple of days to see how it goes.

So from one Anne-Marie to another thank you for the help that you provided to me and the obvious help you provide through this site -

Yes that is weird. Both from the same place using the same service and with the same name.... hmmmmm, Maybe Twin sisters? I know the parents couldn't decide what to call them so they just called one Ann Marie and the other Annie M......

Cheers you two. Glad you got the problem worked out.. (Hopefully anyways)

lol - Dodge, xtra.co.nz have a monopoly in NZ and while I'm not sure of the stats..they do have the largest market share by far of all our ISP's. Actually, after all the original confusion with my user name that MishY so kindly help me out with, when I first saw Annie's post, I thought "I dont remember posting a question". Then I remembered that I dont have Windows 98 anymore
