I upgraded a 200mhz cyrix computer with a 100gb hard drive.. I found that I had to flash the bios with an update to get the cmos to find it. It does but windows 98 locks up when I boot. I can get to safe mode and there are no conflicts showing. I reloaded windows and have found that it will boot normally as long as the cd is in the drive but locks up otherwise. I have partitioned and formatted the drive... Norton is the virus program on the computer. Do you know of anything I am missing or if Norton is causing problems with bootup on older machines like MacAfee is?

Hi there mtrigo, welcome to the forum.

Got a few questions and no answers at this stage:

1) Can you give us a few specs on the motherboard & BIOS update (old version and new).

2) How did you get Windows and Norton on the drive in the 1st place? Ghost?
Did you overinstall windows or start clean?

I'd say windows is unhappy with new bios version - seeing new features in normal mode that it's not trying to load in Safe mode and causing the hang.
Best bet is a clean install.

Have you tried the old hard drive since the BIOS update?

Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-586SG. The 100gb hard drive is installed as drive D. The original C drive is still the boot drive. Win 98 and Norton were already on C. I added the D drive, found out that the Bios needed a flash update, did the flash (it reported a successful update), the Bios detected the new drive, and I formated the new drive with EZ drive. When I rebooted the computer, windows would lock up during the boot process during the GUI (Windows Screen) load. I rebooted the computer and it would load in Safe Mode. I checked for resource conflicts and found none. Tried to reboot, same result. When I tried step by step confirmation it locked up after mouse driver. I ended up reinstalling windows over the old one. No changes. I found that if I leave the windows disk in the cd drive while I boot I have no problems, windows loads normally. Remove the disk after boot and no problems occur. I am thinking I may need to remove Norton and reinstall.

I'm trying to think what device drivers would load after mouse.
(sorry on W2000 at moment so can't check).

I'm quessing it will be for a feature added in the BIOS update though.
Go into BIOS setup and load safe defaults (if it has that option).
If no "safe options" then check what mode the CD-Rom IDE controller is set to, change it if needed (in BIOS and Windows device manager).
Perhaps disable ACPI?
