PLS HELP No SOUND!!!!

I have a compaq 466, WIN 98SE, 12Gig Quantum Hard drive, My problem is I had no sound coming out when i play winamp or media player but sound plays when I watch tv using ATI TV WONDER ... so I posted this problem in another forum and someone was nice enough to help me and he said that my audio codec might be corrupted or missing but my device manger properties was okay and it says that everything is working prorperly.. so he gave me a link to download a new codec, My sound card is an onboard ESS Solo...

And so I download it and when installed and restarted everything totaly screwed up! and I got scared to cuz I just got my computer reformated and I lost many files! and now i fnished downloading those many many mp3's again.. cuz I dont have CD burner for backup.. but nway.. ya everything screwed up.. and so it automatically restarted me to safe mode cuz if its not on safe mode it wont start it will just freeze.. and so I unistall it and restarted and everything worked normal! phew! except for my sounc card and that ther was no sound coming out! now even when I watch TV with the ATI TV wonder no sound.. and now ther are problems cuz on my system properties it doesn show

And I think if I just unistall everything bout my sound card driver etc.. and install it again it might work.. what do u guys think? but How can I do this? cuz when I reinstall the drivers it says it cant find it in my c:\windows\option\cabs and I tried the CD WIN 98SE it cant find it ther too.. so can anyone pls help me!!! cuz I only use my computer for internet and music.. and tv.. Ur help is GREAT appreciated! and i'm happy cuz at least everything else works! only sound is screwed up!

Hi sesquim

Don't know if I can help but you might want to look in the system manager and see what is displayed. Just a thought but perhaps the wrong drivers for your board got installed by Windoz.

What is displayed (control panel, system, sound, driver and driver details.

Perhaps that might provide some ideas for others to assist you, I believe that there is an option to install drivers there. It is just possible that the proper drivers may not be found automatically by windoz. I Know the CompaQ has some funny stuff going on, proprietary dirvers etc., you didn't mention Manufacturere of the puter.

You mentioned in your post that the drivers appeared to be functioning properly, but are they the correct ones?

Perhaps this information is already available (i.e.) you have done this before. If so, post it and maybe someone will be able to better assist you.

Just another thought, is there an Icon for sound (little speaker) Near the clock? If so click on it twice and you should get sound characteristics panel, make sure wave and perhaps everything but Mic are not muted and are at max volume.

thanks b1kra for replying. Ya I think its the right drivers.. .. I dont want to touch anything right now cuz it might screw up even more... im just happy that internet works and only sound doesnt.. cuz I have lots of bad experiences with computers!!! That 's why I dont like computers! But I cant live w/out computers! hehe! And if no one can help me.. I'll see bout getting a new sound card maybe that will help.. but ya man COMPAQ sucks! It was a mistake buying this computer! For once I just want a "normal computer" like the ones that dont screw up a lot!

Took another look at your system and I noticed that you have an apparent problem and something is installed under Other Devices and marked with ? and ! in yellow

Apparently you have a pci sound card and the drivers are not installed properly and windoz has just shoved it in other devices where it seems to stick everything that it discovers but does not have the information to install properly. I believe that perhaps the msi file for the sound card is missing.

If you are game go into the system and remove the Other Devices items shut down pull the sound card and boot up again. Look to see if there is any entry for "Other Devices" or any conflicts, could be a problem with the sound card??? hope we can get this straightened out.

Do you have the Compaq recovery disk? Sometimes you just have to use it and reinstall their version of Windoz, kinda sucks I know. But my limited experience with Compaq machines was trying to install win 98 SE on a Me machine. Had similar problem no sound at all and couldn't even connect or use the modem or install one. I formatted the disk and reinstalled 98 - no good same problems Finally gave up and reinstalled from the ME recovery disk and everything worked fine??? came to the conclusion that there must be some proprietary drivers or something with Compaq as well as HP computers so I have heard.

wow thanks dude! I dont think I have compaq recovery disk.. well....hmmmm le me see.. k, I have "compaq quick erase" its 4CD's!!! I use this all da time whenever my computer really screws up! its my last hope and it always works.. it makes everything back to normal.. but I have to reinstall everything! And it takes like a whole day to do all of this! And everything is working fine right now.. so.. ya I hope someone can help me! Thanks a lot! for all ur help! ya i'll go to that site! Thank you!

Sound works! and You and he just saved me from formating my computer and money too! from getting a new sound card like what some advice in other forums.. thanks a lot dude! and I also learned a new technique or method.. with my computer hehe. ..
