 Usually I Google my way out of computer problems, but this one just plain has me stumped, and I can't find anything on the internet that can help me.

I needed to download some drivers to my laptop the other day. When I unhooked the ethernet cable from my desktop, the cable modem lost power. No lights, nothing. I tried disconnecting and plugging back in the power cable, nothing. I reset the cable modem, nothing. I plugged the ethernet cable into my laptop, nothing. So I plugged the ethernet cable back into my desktop, and the power came on. The cable modem works fine, but only if connected to that computer (my desktop).

The laptop's network adaptor is fine, it is plugged in at work right now and is connected. There is no router in the equation until tomorrow, when I'll be delivered a brand spanking new wireless router that i will give a try.

I tried 2 cables, another old desktop, all the same thing, my cable modem only has power when connected to my main comp. I could understand it not allowing the laptop to get online, but to lose power totally? Any help on this would be appreciated.

I have an Arris cm450 if that helps any.

An update...It was the modem. The technician doesn't understand what it was about the modem, but a swap-out confirmed it. Everything seems to be working fine now.
