I work at a hotel with DSL connections in the rooms but no maintenance contract. Is there a SIMPLE, quick hardware device-not the computer itself-that I can use to test individual cat-5 lines to determine if there is a good, active connection? Thanks for any help.

There are heaps of line testers on the market. Anything from very high end stuff "2000+ bucks" to lesser "149 bucks". What type of DSL line you have will help to point you twards a device that would fit what you need. Also maybe post a price range.

I have a Lan-Rover (http://www.contacteast.com/product/group.asp?parent_id=7069) in my toolbox.

The T1 tester I can do for you yes. You realize of course I submit invoices. :)
The one your using now...did you know SureTape™ (http://www.duct-tape.com/) is the superior brand?
