I recently used the QuickRestore CD's on my Compaq Presario 7478 with Windows 98. When that was done, the registration screen came up. But I couldn't fill it out because it caused my computer to become unresponsive. Every time I boot up, I have to quickly click Close on the illegal operation window that pops up. This prevents the registration screen from appearing. I am able to use my computer normally, but it's a real pain having to do that every time.

You should be able to go to Start/Run/ type msconfig
Go to the startup tab. There should be something in there like Compaq Reminder, or just reminder, something along those lines. This should disable the Registration reminder.... |

Hey CBMatt!
Hi I'm glad u got ur problem fix! I got a compaq computer too presario 5711 and it always screws up! I just hate it! and I always have to use quick restore cd's! But I just want to ask u how many quick restore cd's do u have? cuz they gave me 4! 2 on each cd case or paper case... and its marked "disc 1 & disk2" or something like that but one is french! And I just hate that cuz whenever I do quick restore sometimes I insert the wrong version and its french! and I dont know how to read french! and sometimes the whole quick restore process screws up! and I cant reboot or anything! argg! So does anyone or the moderator know if my quick restores cd's are suppose to have 4cds? with a french and english version? cuz I think its suppose to cuz sometimes it tells me to insert the non english version.. .but that's just weird! its should be just like 2cds! nway.. thanks!

HERE WE GO AGAIN
Hi sesquim,
Thought I would scan this forum to see if I could possibly help anyone, sorry that your sound problem is such a vexation, but compaq and HP puters are in a world of their own with proprietary drivers etc. that really makes them hard to diagnose software wise. I believe that there should be two discs to the restore routine. I would mark those that are in French and not use them. Is there not some indication of the disk use printed on it? My only experience was with a compaq that had ME on it and the owner wanted 98 SE. I formatted and installed the 98 no problem, but didn't use discs from Compaq just a full windows install disk. No Sound and no Internet everything else worked fine. Just only 1 Com port and one LPT so I could not even insttall a modem card. Tried it - no luck. Ended up reinstalling the system that the puter came with, and everything worked fine??? Kinda scarey, but obviously the common windows vxd's and drivers won't work on a compaq Why? I don't know. I sure hope that this is not your problem, but for sure any files that are missing should be from the compaq disc's:cheesy:
