I have a Compaq Presario 6000 on XP that is using Broadband through an ethernet connection. I've used ipconfig to /release and /renew my IP address but during the renew stage the process timesout and says unable to connect to DHCP server. I have tried to repair the LAN connection while in network connections and just about everything I can think of.
ie..checked for loose wires, reformatted hard drive to reinstall windows, talked with the Roadrunner techs, checked all properties of my devices. Rdbox37 |

Welcome to CTH ...
How is your network set up? Is the PC connected directly to the modem or do you have a router? BTW - repair connection on XP isn't really anything but a release and a renew... Not much real reparing is done. go figure

Hi Thank you for helping me.
We are directly connecting to the modem. I will be quicker with my responses from now on. |

Ok. So you should be getting you IP directly from your ISP. It may turn out that you need their help to get this resolved, but lets track down what is happening then we can figure who's problem it is.
How do the lights on the modem look? Does XP show that you are 'connected' in the system tray? What protocols do you have installed on the connection? Can you run ipconfig /all and post back the output? What are you running for a firewall?

How do the lights on the modem look? There are 5 lights. All are lit sometimes and sometimes everyone except the send light. ISP already confirmed the modem is connected.
Does XP show that you are 'connected' in the system tray? Yes 100 What protocols do you have installed on the connection? I'm sorry I don't understand this question. Can you run ipconfig /all and post back the output? I have to do some running on this because PC's are in different locations. I will post ASAP.. What are you running for a firewall? They are no programs installed, just a clean copy of Win XP. Windows firewall has been enabled, disabled... |

Ok. The XP firewall should NOT be affecting DHCP.
If you go to the properties for the network connection you should see the list of protocols (or components) installed fo rthe connection. They should be something like 'Client for microsoft networks', TCP/IP, etc. Post the protocol and ipconfig output and will can continue from there.

There is no firewall enabled. I do not have SP2 installed. No 2nd party software.
In Network Connections under LAN it is connected and says enabled all other settings normal. Protocols checked: (All settings seem normal) Client for Microsoft Networks (File Sharing was unchecked when it worked, checked when the problem started, and is now unchecked again.) It looks like either do do not have a good connection to your modem or the modem is malfunctioning. Was this working? Have you done anything recently?
Try unistalling the NIC and reinstalling it. Do you get a green light on the NIC? Is it solid or flashing?

Thank you for your continuing support.
Hello z1p,
I tried uninstalling the existing NIC and reinstalled...same prob. I also tried a different NIC from another CPU...same prob. I tried using a different CAT5....same prob. The green light flashes, and the orange light is solid. Installed SP2. As far as the Modem Limited to No connect indicator is in the toolbar, and our ISP says the modem is fine but are will to replace it. The modem has digital cable, telephone, and broadband running through it. The phone and tv work fine so the ISP is saying it's on our end. I am going to try taking a emergency computer I have with ME installed and hook it up. It has a NIC and has never had this roadrunner service. I figure when I connect the modem it should fire right up. If that is the case I will post results. I WILL figure this out!
