aggghhhh! someone help me, having a rough time making a wired and wireless network!!!

So here's the deal - I'm trying to make a network within my house, using a router. Recently, I just aquired an external adsl modem, which enabled me to use a router (I had an internal modem before, with no ethernet out, so it was no good with a router). So now that I have this wireless router, and the external modem, I successfully wired them both up to my desktop computer, my dell dimension 8200. The connection is there, and it is wired from the dell to the router. I have internet.

So , the other part of it is that I'm trying to get a laptop into that. It has an internal wireless card in it, and it can successfully connect with the router to have internet, and I have done that. Now I have to, not sure how, I've tried ICS and the wizards and all, try to get the dell and the laptop to fileshare with each other. I expected I'd have to make some sort of a LAN with that, going through the router. But I really don't know how, and I need some sort of guide for that, but nothing seems to be giving me the answer.

My PC is a Dell Dimension 8200, like I said, 1.7ghz 512 RDRAM, with a 10/100 Ethernet NIC card which is working perfectly. It is running on Windows ME, but I plan to have that upgraded to WinXP as soon as I can backup my stuff on it. The notebook is a Dell Inspiron 6000m, 1.6ghz 512 DDR SDRAM, and running Windows XP. The internal wireless card is also flawless.
So I can get internet, but I can't get the two computers to talk to each other at all. Can someone help me out? Thanks

Did you say your desktop is connected to both the modem AND the router? Usually, the modem is connected to the router so it manages the connection, and other computers connect to the router. That way you don't need to fiddle with ICS.

Are both computers using the same workgroup name? Right-click My Computer->Properties->Computer Name->Change, and make sure the Workgroup is the same on both PCs. Also, make sure the Windows firewall is setup to allow File & Printer Sharing. Try opening My Network Places and see if both computers are listed on there, that way you can tell they can see each other. Finally, make sure you have actually specified any folders to share.

Sorry, yes that's what I meant - the ADSL modem is connected to the router, and then then the router goes to the computer through an ethernet cable. My first post wasn't so clear, was it...

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean, the PC is running on Windows ME and it shows nothing of a workgroup name. I'm quite sure it's set to the default - MSHOME, on both. And that's the thing - I can't see the other computer when I go check on My Network Places. Windows ME doesn't have a built in firewall, I assume, but I'm not quite sure how to work the one on XP.

Thanks

MS has a document on file sharing. You may want to download it and look at the section for WIndows ME. It may get you through the setup, but at the very least it will give you a better understanding of what needs to be done.
