Hi dinos - are you referring to opening a new window in your browser? If so, which browser are you having a problem with. If its Internet Explorer - try this:
Go to Start > Run, and run the following commands one after the other, each line followed by 'enter':
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 comcat.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
Run each line individually. After each run, you should see a short message stating the command was successful. Close IE and Reboot.

Hi, I'm having a similar problem - when I click on a link that opens a new window, the window opens but apart from the top bar stays transparent.
I have done all the suggestions in the last post and re-booted but still the same. I also downloaded a new version of IE 6 but still the same.
Would appreciate any help you can give me as a number of the sites I visit regularly use a new window on their links.
Thanks in advance.

Hi trig -welcome to CTH. You may have a broken entry in file associations. You could try this:
Go to my computer click on the View Menu and select Options or folder options and click on File Types.
Scroll down to the URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocols, click edit then edit again when the new dialogue box opens and make sure the following is in the application used to perform action box:
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
The same applies for URL:Gopher
DDE should be set to: "%1",,-1,0,,,,
Application should say: IExplore
DDE application not running should be blank
Topic should be: WWW_OpenURL

Hi Annmarie,
thanks for the quick reply, I have done that but still no joy.
It seems to open a new window but then stops responding.

trig - you are not using a PopUp Stopper of any kind are you? If you are, disable it. Also, have you downloaded all the recommended updates for IE and Win98? If not, go to the Windows Update site and install them. Post back and let us know how you get on.

Hello again..I don't have a pop up stoper installed and I just went to the windows update page and downloaded a critical update...that was all there was to download, I had previously (last week) updated from there.
Still not working though.
I click on a link a window opens and then freezes.
I do appreciate your help though..thanks again.
This only started today, was ok yesterday. I did download a picture editor last night and thought it may be that what was causing the problem so un-installed it.

Hi again trig - it could be a problem in your registry. Provided you havent installed any other new hardware or software, you could try a manual restore of your registry to the last good backup. Win98 backs up 5 copies of your registry by default.
Reboot into DOS using:
Start > Shutdown > Reboot to MS-DOS mode
You will now be in DOS mode, and it should look like this: C:\Windows>
now type scanreg /restore
(note the space between "scanreg" and the forward slash)
At blue screen, use your mouse or keyboard arrows to choose a date which you know the registry was fine. The date you choose must say "Started" next to it.
Make sure the word "Restore" is highlighted, and press your keyboards Enter key. At the "You have restored........." prompt, press your keyboards Enter key.
Your computer will restart in MS-DOS mode again. At the MS-DOS prompt, type Exit and press your keyboards Enter key. Computer will then re-start in Windows. See if that helps.

Ok, done all that but it didn't give me the option to select a date - it defaulted to a date in June, anyway that was not a problem just had to reinstall a few drivers BUT still the same. new window will still not open.
All very frustrating this.
But I do thank you for your time.

Hi trig - now that you have reverted back to a previous good backup of your registry, try re-registering those dll's again. I'm not wildly optimistic but its worth a try. Here are the instructions again.
Go to Start > Run, and run the following commands one after the other, each line followed by 'enter':
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 comcat.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
Run each line individually. After each run, you should see a short message stating the command was successful. Close IE and Reboot.
Also, I have just seen a post elsewhere where someone with the same issue uninstalled Micrografx Picture Publisher 10 and this fixed the problem in IE6. It seems that there is a good possiblity that the picture editor that you installed may have caused the problem. Check your drive thoroughly to make sure that all files were removed by the uninstall.

Thought I would re-install windows as a last resort and it's worked, the new windows are now opening.
I do thank you though for all the time you have spent helping me, if your ever in England I will buy you a pint :)
Thanks once again Annmarie.
