Fried my laptop, but have SIM card.

I want to connect the SIM card to my
desktop PC. (Windows98SE).

Pretty sure I can do it with a USB GPRS
modem, but I'm not even very sure of that.

Before I go out and buy another piece of
useless hardware, can anybody tell me if
I'm on the right track? And if I am, will
my T-Mobile SIM card work in any GPRS
modem?

I talked to T-Mobile about an adapter for the
GC79 GPRS LAN PC card for the desktop before
I figured out I could pull the SIM card. They
looked at me like I had three heads.

TIA

I had to go and look up what you were talking about. I hadn't heard of SIM cards.

I did find this GSM Card. It seems as if it should work. But then I looked up what you have already and saw that it was a PCMCIA card.

Given that you should be able to get something like this PCMCIA adaptor and use your current card, assuming it is compatible with the version of windows on your PC.

cmd /k ipconfig/all [use to start ipconfig from 'Run']
cmd /k ping <some website, like google or yahoo> [use to ping 'www.google.com' from 'Run']

Oh my. Looks like this will work with my GC79 GPRS Wireless LAN
PC Card -- what I was going to pull the SIM card out of. Says right
there on the box supports Wireless LAN Cards.

(I was looking for this PCI/PCMCIA adapter to start with, but I didn't
have the terminology, wasn't sure what I was looking for. That's when
I saw the USB GPRS modems.)

Thanks!

Glad I could help. Wouldn't it be nice if tech support at companies had a clue sometimes....

I talked to Linksys, Sony Ericsson (who makes the GC79), AND
to T-Mobile. They all said "Buh-buh-buh."

Maybe if I'd had the right acronyms...

Anyway, so glad I found this forum. Thanks for all you do.
