XP/ME Network
Hello, I have a bit of a problem which one of you may be able to help me with, I have set up a small home network using a 30m RJ45 X-over lead, I put it all together, ran network setup wizard, on both PCs, no problem. When I connect the computers, I get the LAN 'speech bubble' thing telling me they are connected. When I try to use the internet from the host, it is fine, obviously, but when I try to use it using the client, it wont work. When I try to explore the network, it only has the computer I am on listed, please help!

A few things to note:

-I am using...
-Tesco Broadband
-F-Secure Security suite
-Windows XP home edition on the Host downstairs
-Windows ME (Crap, I know) on the client upstairs
-If I go to Control Panel, then network connections, then LAN, it will say it is connected,

Basically, I want to share my broadband connection, I hope I have just overlooked something simple, because I have exhausted all ideas so far.
Now, apparantly internet gateway is connected to Tesco Broadband, using 'DOWNSTAIRS1' (the host), even though 'DOWNSTAIRS1' is not even on the network according to 'whole network' in 'my network places', the speed and everything is right as well, but I still can't get connected to the internet!

Thanks in advance,

Downing:)

Open Control Panel->Network Connections, right click the Local Area Connection and select properties, scroll down the list to highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", and click Properties. Make sure the "Use the following IP Address" option is checked, and that each computer has an IP address of 192.168.0.x (the x can be any number, but cannot be the same on each PC), also make sure each PC has 255.255.255.0 as its subnet mask. This is the exact method to follow for Windows XP, I'm don't think ME has the same procedure but it should be similar.

I don't think a static IP is needed, what seems to be missing is setting up ICS or some other internet sharing software. Assuming that the XP machine has the broadband, see http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/crawford_02july01.mspx for a simple writeup on enabling ICS.

I have done the above steps, an error message occurs:
'An error occured while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled.
A device attached to the system is not functioning'

This was the on the XP machine for the broadband connection, correct? If yes then for that network device do the following:

1. In Control Panel, double-click Network.
2. Click the network adapter on the Select Adapters tab, and then click Remove.
3. Click Close, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.
4. Reinstall the network adapter driver. (if your network adaptor came with one)

The card came with my PC, what about downloading the driver from here (http://support.packardbell-europe.com/support/download/itemnr/REFFIUP04700100-04.asp?c=cl) and then installing it? BTW, I might be able to get hold of an old PC, I could use it to test the other computers, and also the cable, as I have a smaller spare one, as the cable I am using is 30m long, would it be worth it?

If that is the NIC that you have the driver looks fine. I don't think bringing another PC in the mix right now will help. Let's get ICS enabled and see where it goes from there.

Right, sorry for not posting for a while, as I very nearly gave up and thought I would get someone round to do it for me for about £70... anyway, I have remembered a few things lately,
1) My network card upstairs didn't seem to need any driver, so I never installed the Driver from the disk, BTW, it didn't come up with 'New hardware found', and it could detect the computer downstairs, so I just left it at that.
2) Maybe if I did use another old computer, I would be able to find out where the problem occurs, e.g. if it can fileshare with one, but not the other, it would suggest one has a problem, but the other is fine, also, i could use a smaller spare cable, to see if that makes a difference.

Hopefully I'll get one before the end of the week, and hopefully it will already have an ethernet card!

Thanks for your time and help:)
