This...is seriously annoying. :disgust:
I cannot connect to the internet on my laptop. Having failed to create a PC - Laptop direct network using a crossover cable :disgust: I now simply take out the internet cable from the back of my PC and plug it into the Laptop. Easy. Exactly the same cable, from exactly the same port in exactly the same router.
On the PC, 48,000 packages sent, 40,000 received.
On the laptop, 200 packages sent, 3 received.
aaaaaaarrrRRRRRGGGGGH!
I've tried disabling then re-enabling it, repairing it (which supposedly succeeded) and every time I start IE it says "Working Offline" and no other page will load.
I cannot...tell you how aggravating this is, on top of this DUMB inability for the two computers to recognise each other in a TWO COMPUTER NETWORK!!!
Man. Please...help me. Before I lose my mind.
So, to decipher all my rantings:
1) No connection on laptop, when same cable works on PC.
2) (optional from months ago) Can't set up two way file sharing between Laptop and PC using Crossover Cable.
Thanks.

Well there are a few issues here so lets talk about them. What ver of Windows does the laptop use? Do you have a firewall running on the laptop? What network protocols are installed on the laptop for example "Internet Protocol tcp/ip" As for the crossover if you use a router you really don't need a crossover cable just get another cat5 cable plug the lapper into the router and you can share files/folders over the lan.

Laptop is using XP SP2, same as PC.
I have the standard Windows Firewall, which I've tried on and off, and some weird program called Panda, which came with the Laptop and I disabled pretty quickly (really annoying popups about safety etc.).
In Properties of my LAN thing, under the General tab there's a big list of stuff. All are ticked, and they include Internet Protocol (TCP/IP); Microsoft TCP/IP version 6; File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks. Among others.
Regarding a straight plug-into-the-router job, I've tried. The same thing happened with the packages (very low). I'll go and try again now, but I'm pretty sure that's all that will happen.

OK. My laptop is now plugged in to the router, it says "LAN is now connected at 100.00 mbps" but the packages are 40 sent and 6 received.

Ok before we look at the adaptor itself lets look at some more lan properties. Check to see if "obtian ip address auto" is ticked. The same for dns addresses. Plug into another port in the router say port 2 or 3. Make sure to use patch cat5 crossover won't work right. After you plug in look at the back of the computer at the NIC does it have lights on it if so are they doing anything or just dark? After you plug in and have checked all the above go to a command line and type ipconfig /all write down what you see and post it in here.

Just coming. Give me a few minutes to do it.

Here are all the things in the General section of LAN Properties:
Client for MS Networks;
Service Advertising Protocol;
File and Printer sharing for MS Nets;
QoS Packet Scheduler;
Net Monitor Driver;
NWLink NetBIOS;
NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol;
MS TCD/IP version 6;
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
All are checked.
I have tried the laptop plugged in to all four sockets in the router, and none have worked (using a normal cat5 cable).
There is no light in the back of the laptop, but there is in the PC. I think this is simply because there isn't enough space on the laptop for things like that.
I've just done the ipconfig /all. Do you really want everything!
OK.

I hope that means something.
I don't know what NIC means, but otherwise I think I've covered everything. Look forward to your reply. Thanks.

Sorry for ther terms I forget sometimes not everyone uses them everyday. NIC just stands for "Network Interface Card" or network adaptor. That ipconfig info is very interesting. Your NIC would appear to be this one:
Eth adapter Wi. Net. Con.:
Media State: Media disconnected
Description: Intel<R> PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network
Connection
Physical address: 00-0E-35-6F-EF-6E
That is a wireless adaptor and you aren't using it right? The other listed adaptor is :
Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface:
Connecion specific DNS Suffix:
Description: TTP-I (same as above)
Physical address:FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF
Dhcp enabled: No
IP Address: fe80::5445:5245:44f%6
Default Gateway:
NetBIOS over Tcpip: Disabled
I'm not really sure what sort that is but doesn't look like a normal eathernet adaptor. DHCP isn't enable on it either. Do you have "obtian ip address auto" ticked in the check box for lan properties?

If it's supposed to be in that same list as file sharing etc. that I listed, then it isn't even there. So no, I suppose it isn't ticked.
Oh and no I'm not using the wireless thing (live in a pretty rural area!)

I have the standard Windows Firewall, which I've tried on and off, and some weird program called Panda, which came with the Laptop and I disabled pretty quickly (really annoying popups about safety etc.). :eek: Panda is antivirus software. Are you running another AV application instead??

No, I don't think so. I have everything security-wise disabled and the laptop keeps telling me how unprotected I am, which is annoying in itself. But no, I have nothing like Norton on the laptop.
