Are you on dial up or broadband? Are you using any other router/modem?
You may be looking at an ISP that allows only one machine access.

Ok, then as far as getting both online, you need a router such as the Netgear DG834G because you can have as many machines as you like online at the same time but your ISP only sees one "computer" the router.
As for file sharing etc. between the two Mac's use sharepoints available from versiontracker.com. Otherwise you will only see the Home folder.

If you use the Airport you will be getting 11mbps wireless and minimal security, if you forget it and get a new wireless router you get 54mbps wireless and the latest security. If you are not worried about this then get a plain modem/router and connect the airport base to that, but you will need to configure it as a wireless access point. The Netgear would be already configured, the only thing you need to enter in it is your ISP login details.
Using a router is dead easy, the ADSL goes into the router and it shares it out to your computers.

Transmission rates (maximum):
iBook G3 - 11 mbs
iBook G4 - 54 mbs
(older) Apple Airport Base Station, ABS, - unknown (depending on ... how old), 11 mbs assumed.
Connecting to the ABS via Airport wireless card:
As per this ABS image (http://techstore.doit.wisc.edu/showroom/infopages/pers/images/airportex_connections.jpg) link - connect the cable modem to the ABS (WAN) port, and setup the ABS via 'AirPort Admin Utility' and 'AirPort Setup Assistant' ('/Applications/Utilities/').
Connecting to the ABS via ethernet cable:
You can purchase an ethernet switch (not a hub), and connect its (WAN) port to the ABS'es 'LAN' port. Then you connect each iBook to any available switch LAN port.
Use 'System Preferences' 'Network' Utility to set up each iBook as a 'Built in Ethernet' 'TCP/IP' network connection.
