:dizzy: Hi there.
OK, I have absolutely NO idea where to begin- completely, utterly new to this.
I was origionally going to get a free basic web thing from my IP server, but the further I went around in circles with their so called set up, the more frustrated I became. Getting the host/users web address for myself was about a minute process, that was easy.
But they have supposed easy web set up, and it ended up being links to another site thats apparently got step by step instructions to start up ( so my IP server says) and well..I found some useful downloads, but, in al honesty for someone who doesnt know anything like mysef I didnt find any simple step by step set up's.
Im in australia-my internet server is in Australia, and the link was in USA, and to me it was more likely for business web, not someone like me.
The site I went to actually had better offers than my IP server (USA site)
The site I ended up at was: Builder.com & there are to memory 3 companies that offer the entire package- Domain name, and all the software you need to set up, from what I understand..
If someone here could check this site out and offer me the best choice or some helpful advice I would be ever SO greatful. Or know of any similar sites in Australia that are good?
P.S my appologies for such a long post ( forgive me)
 thanks and bye for now.
HaVe A gOoD DaY.

Hi Yme and welcome to CTH,
There are some awesome guys here that can give you wonderful advice on this subject. Rockboy and degsy just to name two "there are way more trust me". What I would do if in your shoes being totally new to building would be to ask yourself a few questions. For example are you just wanting to tinker around with building a site or will this be something you want to look very pro in the end? How much time and effort do you want to put into this project? What sort of content do you plan to unleash upon the world? Asking yourself those type questions might help in getting started. Most people that are brand new to building a site ask me where to start and I always tell them the same thing. Start with something as easy as you can find. There are a ton of free hosting places on the net that will host your site for free but with banner add's and such. Most any hosting company you go with thats any good gives you an advantage. First they will often let you buy a package deal that lets you register your domaine then host your site. These same providers offer free tools to help you get started. Most of them are "what you see is what you get" html editing tools. I'm not really up on my Aussie hosting companies but places like godaddy.com and 1and1.com are both examples of hosting providers that offer package deals. So my advice is if you just want to tinker at first don't pay for it. Use some free space like geocities or yahoopages. Later if you want to get more into things and actually start to build a nice site pay a few bucks and go with a good hosting company.

If you already have the web space and login info from your ISP then you can upload files directly using ftp or thru a file manager at their web site. Many ISP's provide a site and a small amount of web space for their customers. If yours doesn't then do a search for free web hosting. I like Hostrocket. No banners, frames, popups, etc.
http://www.hostrocket.com/free/
They have various site creation tools but they're confusing to me. ;) I'd rather create the files then upload them thru the file manager (they don't support standard ftp with the free accounts).
The first thing is to create a file called index.html. You can get a free html editor here...
http://www.nvu.com/
NVU is an excellent editor. Download and try it out. It is a lot like Word but will create a properly formatted html file. Once you learn a little more you can also use it to edit the html source code. Web pages are html files. DO NOT USE programs like MSWord to create html files even though they say they can do it.
Make a new directory in My Documents called Website or something like that and save the file to your hard drive. You can upload files from that directory to your website.
Once you've created that web page and uploaded it thru the file manager you'll probably want to learn more and refine your website. Some basics here...
http://www.w3schools.com/
Start with the tutorial called 'Learn HTML'. There's a lot more stuff there for later and as you learn you can explore the site. It's excellent.
This should get you started. If you are into serious web building later then you can get a domain name and some paid hosting.
If you have questions, just ask.

You're welcome. :)
This post will stay in the forum but as newer posts push it farther down it will eventually go down the list and onto offscreen pages. You can always find it by searching the forum for your own posts/topics (Click Search/Advanced Search). The easiest way would be to add the topic to your Favorites.

If by chance you do use www.geocities.com (http://www.geocities.com) and you use their page builder there isn't anything I dont know about that so feel free to hollar. The page builder is a nice utility for beginners, it will write the html for you all you have to do is open the utility and look at your graphics and drag them around to the desired postion.
