Hello!

I've been trying to move a whole bunch of files from my old laptop to my new desktop. A friend told me that it was possible by creating a network for the laptop and desktop and transferring the files that way, without having to buy a program to do it for you. That's all he told me and I have no idea what to do. I have a cable connection for both devices. And I have both Ethernet and crossover cables. The desktop uses Windows XP and the laptop uses Windows XP Professional. Does that help? How exactly do I make the network and transfer the files? Thanks to anyone who can help!!!

PS: Sorry if this is really complicated....

Are you looking to do a 1 time transfer or to regularly share files? You said both have a cable connection, do you mean both have cable broadband at the same time? If so how?

I just want to take the files and pictures I have on my old laptop and put it on my new desktop. I'm sorry, I meant both can be connected through cable (separately).

If its a 1 time deal it doesn't seem worth while setting up file sharing. So your choices as I see is either to copy the files to disks or CDs or to use something like FTP to transfer. Have you used FTP before? Do you have an FTP client on the laptop?

I have no idea what that is or how to use it. :( Sorry...
